Sunrise 2027 is GS1's industry-coordinated push to get retail point-of-sale and point-of-care systems able to read 2D barcodes — GS1 DataMatrix and QR Codes — not just today's 1D barcodes like UPC/EAN. Important: GS1 US itself describes this as a target for scanning capability across the industry, not a legal requirement that every product must carry a 2D code by a fixed date. It isn't a compliance deadline in the way EUDR or FSMA 204 are — treat it as an infrastructure milestone, not a law.
Why Pharma Should Care Anyway

Sunrise 2027 is newer and voluntary in the sense that it's a coordinated capability push, not a law — it's about retail scanning infrastructure catching up to data that, in pharma's case, already exists. Keep them as two separate threads: one is 'are you legally serializing,' the other is 'can the point of sale actually use what you're already producing.'
What To Check Before 2027
1. Confirm your existing serialization already outputs GS1 DataMatrix-compliant data — most pharma operations already do this under DSCSA-type rules.
2. Ask your retail and pharmacy partners whether their point-of-sale systems can read 2D codes yet. If not, that's their gap, not necessarily yours — but it affects how soon your data becomes useful downstream.
3. Don't over-invest to hit an artificial '2027 deadline' — there isn't one in the legal sense. Prioritize your actual serialization-law compliance first.
