GS1 2D Barcode Compliance for Retail Private-Label Brands

What Sunrise 2027 Actually Is (And Isn't)

Sunrise 2027 is GS1's industry-coordinated target for retail point-of-sale systems to be able to read 2D barcodes — GS1 DataMatrix and QR Codes — alongside today's 1D UPC/EAN codes. GS1 US is explicit that this is a capability target, not a legal requirement that every product must carry a 2D code by a fixed date. But your private-label products sit on the same shelf as national brands who are moving to 2D anyway, for richer data at checkout and better recall management.

Why Private Label Specifically Needs a Plan

National brands typically have dedicated packaging and compliance teams tracking this transition. Private-label teams inside a retailer often don't — the barcode gets treated as a fixed spec nobody revisits until something breaks. That's exactly how private-label products end up behind national brands on 2D readiness, even though the retailer controls the entire packaging and supply chain for its own label.

What To Do Before 2027

1. Audit which private-label SKUs still rely on 1D-only barcodes.

2. Confirm your packaging suppliers can print GS1 DataMatrix or QR codes without a cost or lead-time surprise.

3. Verify your own point-of-sale and inventory systems can actually read 2D codes — don't assume they already do.

4. Use the extra data capacity in a 2D code — lot, batch, expiration date — to strengthen your own recall process, not just to check a box.
